With the month of September almost in the books, ghosts and goblins are gearing up as Halloween is just around the corner. Little children from all corners of the world love this time of year because they get to dress up and go door to door, accruing disgusting amounts of candy that their parents then sift through, looking for the best chocolate! Part of the thrill of Halloween is dressing up in costume, and many children put a lot of thought into their costumes, wanting to have one that is better than everybody else's so they will stand out from their friends and often parents are roped into the task of helping make this happen.

Serious or satire, on the page, on screen, or on-stage, the legend of King Arthur has inspired many artistic variations. With little knowledge of the original story, I set out to read T.H. White's adaptation, The Once and Future King.

Hailed as "The World's Greatest Fantasy Classic," The Once and Future King was published in full in 1958, with the first three of four sections published separately beginning in the late 1930s. White opens his story with a young Arthur living under the care of Sir Ector, raised alongside Ector's biological son, Kay.

Arthur, the illegitimate son of Uther Pendragon, the less-than-noble Norman King of England, and Lady Igraine, the once wife of the Duke of Cornwall, was conceived through deceit. In exchange for a roll in the hay with another man's wife, Pendragon agreed to the wizard Merlyn's demands of handing over the offspring that would come from the tryst.

One day, still a young boy living on Sir Ector's land, Arthur set out on a hunting trip. He soon finds himself lost in the woods and is forced to sleep in a tree for the night. The next morning, hungry, he comes across a cottage and notices a man drawing water from a nearby well.

Hello,

On this past trip, we traveled over a great part of Rancho Los Alisos now that there are nine deer transects set up here. Three of these transects were established in different types of vegetation: oak, mesquite, and riparian. When we were setting up the transects near the Arroyo Las Lajas, we found a cow's placenta. I had never seen anything like this, but it was probably a normal sight for the vaqueros that were with me. We reviewed the fetus inside and everything appeared to be normal.

At a time when President Obama has moved troops out of Iraq and is moving them out of Afghanistan, its looking increasingly like our worries in the Middle East are far from over. Maybe its not unprecedented, but its highly unusual for a sitting secretary of defense to worry in print (to Washington Post columnist David Ignatius) that Israel could launch a strike against Iran as early as this spring. The point of the Israeli attack, according to Ignatius and Panetta, would be to stop Iran before it begins building a nuclear bomb. The U.S. issaying that it would find such a move foolhardy, and yet also reassuring both the Israeli and American publicsthat it is committed to Israels security.

But its probably not Israels true intention to strike Iran anyway.
